A passion passed down through generations remains strong with Buster Manning. Inspired by his grandfather, who started it all, Buster continues the family’s farming legacy with passion, grit, and determination. After graduating from NC State University, he returned home to join the farm, carrying forward the strong work ethic his father and grandfather instilled in him from a young age.
“You either like agriculture and farming or you don’t - and I was one that was attracted to it from an early age, and I haven’t gotten over it yet.”
Today, Buster carries on that legacy at Manning Brothers Farm in Pantego, NC, growing corn and soybeans alongside his sons, Trey and Zach. Together, their work is rooted in family and a shared passion for farming.
To be successful in their operation, the Mannings understand that it takes a balance of give and take between generations—blending time-honored traditions with fresh ideas. While the older generation brings experience and wisdom, the younger generation offers new perspectives and innovation, creating a stronger future for the farm.
While passion and business mindset is vital for success, Buster recognizes the need for a strong support system, including a financial lender.
Reflecting on his partnership with AgCarolina Farm Credit, Buster smiles as he talks about his current loan officer. “It’s been going so good I can’t remember how long it’s been.”
Since 1980, Buster has been a member of AgCarolina. Over the years, that relationship has grown into more than financing, it’s become a trusted source of support.
Buster highlights the benefits of working with a local cooperative, including patronage dividends and educational events that “have been very informative and helpful in our day-to-day operations”, explains Buster.
As challenges in agriculture arise, such as increasing fertilizer and fuel prices, farmers continue to navigate uncertain times. Although Buster remains confident with AgCarolina’s continued support for his farm and local farmers like him, through various agricultural cycles and challenges.
At Manning Brothers Farm, the story is one of resilience, trust, and deep-rooted passion, driven by a lifelong calling and a shared commitment to keep the Manning family farming for generations to come.
